Cellular Confinement

Cellular confinement systems or geocells are honeycombed polymeric cells made from interconnected strips. These are filled with granular material and compacted to create a composite entity. The stiffer the geocell cell walls are, the larger the improvement of the pavement layer modulus and the performance of infill materials, while increasing the bearing capacity of a soil. Stiffness is increased by hoop stresses developed on the cell wall and by passive resistance from the surrounding cells.

Geocell confinement prevents movement and sharing of soil infill under cyclic loading while reducing aggregate attrition. What is crucial is the dimensional stability of the cell in order to maintain soil compaction, and thereby maintain long-term soil stabilization for erosion control and for pavement reinforcement.

A major advantage of 3D cellular confinement systems is their ability to utilize granular material for structural infill. The 3D vertical zone of influence enables the use of poorly graded and fine granular materials, including native soil, sand, and recycled materials for all types of earth stabilization and heavy-duty pavement applications:
